Instead of the usual newsletter, I've decided to start writing more information here on the blog at the end of each week about the targets we worked on, stories we read, and activities we did throughout the week so you can have some discussion points to visit with your child about what they are doing in class!
This week we wrapped up our science unit about what plants need & the different parts. We made posters for our bulletin board. Students had to cut out a plant and then label the parts (roots, stem, leaves, flower, & seeds) and needs (sunlight, air, water, sunlight, space, & soil).
Remember, kids can sign in at home and find out all kinds of information about nonfiction subjects such as animals, earth & space, biographies, and social studies. Visit www.pebblego.com

The first day we read the story and ask questions about what is going on in the story, where & when it takes place, who the main characters are, what the problem (and solution) is, and discuss key details to help us summarize.
Then, on the second day, we summarize the story and discuss six new vocabulary words. We say the new words, discuss their meaning, and then listen for them in the story during the second reading. The students love to hear the 'new' words while rereading the story. We (as adults) assume so much when reading a story to a child. We don't stop to ask them if they understand. It is so important to discuss words and meaning throughout a story!
In math, we reviewed subtraction and took a test today. Students still need to continue practicing this skill at home and show how they came to that answer. Some students are able to do the problems in their head, but it is very important that they show how they got the answer. Remember to log into educreations to watch subtraction lessons at home. Our Kindergarten Team was so excited this morning when we were presented with a $500 check to use towards math manipulatives and interactive math games!! We plan on putting our order in next Tuesday and hope to get our new items asap! We were thrilled when the Ray-Pec Public School Foundation presented us with the check!
I even did a cartwheel in the hallway! :)
