Wow! What a fun day we had celebrating 100 days of Kindergarten. Students made hats counting by 10's, had a special snack that they counted by 1's, had a special visit from Zero the Hero & his sister (and got a donut!), and had special 100th day stations that they could stamp, write, and glue things on a paper.

These past few weeks, we have been reading and writing about community helpers. Students have had fun watching videos, listening to songs, and learning about all the people that help make our community a better place to live. Ask your child to show the book they completed and brought home today. Below is a symbaloo your child can visit that has the songs and shows we've enjoyed: http://www.symbaloo.com/mix/communityhelpers5 You can also find that link on my website: www.halvorsonshome.com > Websites > Community Helpers Here are some pics of us writing: Be sure to check out the weekly newsletter found only online at:
http://www.halvorsonshome.com/newsletters.html I will try to upload it on the blog as well (see below). The 100th day of school celebration is next Friday, January 31st. We are asking each child to bring a collection of 100 items. Some examples of small, inexpensive items you may find around your house include: cotton balls, shells, pennies/coins, buttons, stickers, paper clips, q-tips, pasta and anything else small enough to fit in a baggie. Please do not send food items! Only non-edible items will be presented to the class. Please send items to school in a baggie with your child’s name on it no later than Thursday, January 30th. Your child will bring home his/her items home Friday. A 100's chart will be sent home Monday to use to help count out objects. You can also find the letter & chart on my information link: http://www.halvorsonshome.com/information.html As part of as professional development activity, K teachers videotaped a Pathways to Reading lesson and shared it with each other. We used the videos to discuss ways to improve our small group lessons as well as the chance to take away some great ideas! I thought it would be fun to post the video on my blog so parents can see ways that we use the letter tiles and how we break apart sounds to make CVC (consonant/vowel/consonant) words! I would like to take videos at least once a week of my small groups to give you tips on how you can help your child at home. Here is a fun new site that I'm using to develop lessons that students can watch.
