Four students finished filling their behavior charts this week. In celebration of having such awesome behavior, the students got to pick something out of the treasure box and have lunch with me. We had a great time! :)
We learned the letter Dd and the popcorn words me/go. We started small groups and the students loved learning how to build words on the letter boards or practice Vowel Hill with their own chart! I will meet with four groups three times a week to help build letter & sound recognition, blending/segmenting and spelling words, and writing sentences.
Math:
We continued reviewing teen numbers and focused on 18, 19, & 20.
This week we learned about verbs. We have a fun chant: Verb, Verb, Action Word! We came up with six different verbs Tuesday and Wednesday and had to write sentences using one verb. You should see papers coming home with phonemically spelled words. I am very proud of everyone trying their best! We share our writing with the group and everyone enjoys hearing compliments from each other.
Don't worry about your child continuing to write this way, or even make him/her correct it. If your child asks if it is correct, you should point out the errors, but don't make a big deal of it. I always whip out my ABC chart and ask them if their letter looks like the one on the chart. They usually change it voluntarily after seeing it the correct way. With writing, children should be free to practice and make multiple mistakes without corrections or limitations. By first grade, teachers will start asking children to correct their reversals (and I will after spring break if they are still consistently doing it), and by the end of second grade almost all children have stopped doing it completely.
Have a wonderful weekend!
