How can it already be the end of our third quarter? Your child has grown so much this year. I have loved seeing each and every one of them succeed in their own special way.
We continue to write daily and a group of students share what they wrote with the class. We have borrowed an ELMO display tool that allows students to show their work on the teamboard! Students love to show off their writing and their peers give compliments and suggestions.
When we return from spring break, we will wrap up our current math target: decomposing & composing numbers to 10. Students show ways to make different numbers & write a matching equation in the following photos.

Attention Parents! We have had a lot of sickness going around our room. Please help me with ensuring your child stays healthy by reminding them to wash their hands frequently. We have a sink in the classroom and a sink in each of our bathrooms. I have hand sanitizer, too. The more our children are reminded to wash their hands, the healthier we will all be!
We have been working hard in writing these past two months. Students are learning to write complete sentences and use capitalization and punctuation. I am very proud of the way they stretch out words and use popcorn words and resources around the room! I meet with four groups (one group every day) to help them with specific goals. Students are trained to write around the room independently and only ask for help from another friend when needed. Before winter break, we had a lot of fun with prompted writing.
During our math block, we continue practicing subtraction & addition skills within 10. Check out our addition symbaloo & subtraction symbaloo for fun games & songs.
We spend about five minutes during our number corner to have "number talks." This short activity helps students verbally explain how they solve a problem. If you have heard your child talk about subitizing, it is recognizing a pattern of dots or a number in a snap!
When your child fills his/her behavior chart, they earn a prize from the treasure chest & lunch in the classroom!
Tomorrow is our 100th day of Kindergarten! Thank you for all the donations to make our day special.
We spend 80 minutes each day working on our reading program, Pathways to Reading. We spend 30 minutes in a whole group setting learning new letters and sounds and reading/writing words. Then we break into centers and I meet with three groups every day (your child meets with me on a two days on/one day off rotation). We spend 50 minutes each day writing. Students listen to a story, watch me model a journal entry, and then write independently. I conference with 4-5 students each day. If they conference with me, they also get to share with the class. Watch for these journals to come home every 8-10 school days. Be sure to ask your child what they wrote each day!
Lots of students have filled their behavior chart this month! They get a gift from the treasure chest & lunch in the classroom! Thank you to all the parents who volunteered time and/or supplies for our Fall Party. The kids had a lot of fun! Mrs. Cohee came to read a special book and they played games, had a snack, and created a craft. Reminders: Please send in your child's Book Log at the end of each month. Even if it isn't completely full, I will still send home a Book It ticket for a free personal pan Pizza Hut pizza! Continue sending baggie books back every other day for a new book! If you signed the waiver to check out classroom books, the students seem to really enjoy taking books home that we have read together! These books can be returned one a time if you need more time or want to reread a specific book. There is no due date! Please return library books anytime during the week. Library checkout is usually Friday.
During fire safety week, we had some very special Raymore guests! The fire department came out to teach students what to do if there was a fire. They showed off their gear & trucks! These special students filled their behavior charts. They got a gift from the treasure chest & lunch with me! When students arrive in the morning, they are responsible for unpacking their backpacks, checking their blue folders, putting their snack in their mailbox, and starting their morning work. Students are working hard during their writing block. I meet with 4-5 students daily and work on spacing, capitalization, sentence structure, and writing ideas. These journals will come home every 7-10 days. When they are finished with their writing journal, they can get their writing notebook and do squiggle, stamp/sticker, draw and label, or magazine journals (you may have seem some of these independent pages come home). Coming Up:
Wednesday ~ Library, Show-N-Tell, and Dismissal @1:15 Wednesday & Thursday ~ Parent Teacher Conferences Thursday & Friday ~ No school! Monday ~ Please do not send your child to school in a costume. We will read some Halloween books and do a few small activities, but we do not celebrate the holiday at school. If your family does not celebrate Halloween, please let me know. We will have a fall-themed party November 11th. Students have settled into the routine of school and learning is in full swing! We started writing last week, and students had a great time sharing their writing pieces. Congratulations to these students who filled their behavior chart & had lunch with me! We finished our All About Me bags last week. Everyone's names are on the Word Wall! We are digging deep in understanding letters & numbers during our math and reading blocks. Students are starting to put sounds together to read words!
THANK YOU for all the snack and writing center donations!!!
During our pathways reading block, we reviewed the letter Mm and introduced Nn. We will do one letter a week, focusing on what the letter looks like, what sound it makes, and things that begin with that sound. On Friday, we made a craft with that letter sound (mouse & night).
We've started practicing what it looks like to go to centers. Students are partnered up with one friend and rotate centers. I will begin meeting with students soon during this center time. Right now, we are learning how to solve problems and work together without needing my help.
We have a 20 minute reading block in the morning when we spend time reviewing the rules, creating ways to solve problems, and regulating our emotions. We've read some great stories, such as Chester the Brave, The Juice Box Bully, and When Mouse was Mad. We turn and talk to our neighbor about different parts of the story and ways they think the character can fix the issue.
During our writing block, we introduced what different stages of writing looks like and played letter recognition Bingo.
We are still getting to know all the students in our classroom. A star student is introduced every day and they tell us about themselves and show what is in their All About Me bag.
In math, we continued reviewing numbers 0-10. We want to dig deep in understanding what those numbers mean and the symbol to use to represent how many.
On Thursdays, we have a 25 minute block of time to visit the computer lab. Students are learning to navigate my website.
Remember: Tomorrow is our first early release day. Dismissal will begin at 1:15. We also have PE tomorrow. Please remember to have your child wear tennis shoes!
Every day, we spend about 20 minutes getting to know someone in our classroom. We read their special pennant and they show us their All About Me bag.
I had the entire week's worth of pictures, links, and information on my blog and it just disappeared. I'm so frustrated! I hope to have it done by next Monday so you can see all the wonderful things your child has done this week!
They are absolutely BEAT from the day. We will do a short rest time at the very end of our day. Be sure to send a snack and water bottle every day. I don't mind water bottles left for the evening and I will send them home to be washed on Friday. It is up to you if you want them sent home every day, but you will have to tell your child what you want him/her to do.
